Life’s a Beach: As a former Campus Cuties, this Fordham University fox made us consider grabbing our books and heading back to the library (OK, fine, the student clinic). Luckily, we were able to convince Elizabeth and her teasing tan lines to spend some of her summer break on the beach with us for this steamy photo shoot. We’ll just let the video speak for itself. Maxim Exclusive: Taylor Makakoa

See why this Sin City stunner is the only thing more scorching than the Vegas sun. The only thing more scorching than the Vegas sun is its hottest resident. See Taylor’s pictures here: www.maxim.com If you thought the macadamia nuts Aunt Betty once gave you were the only tasty things to come out of Hawaii, think again. Oahu native and Vegas transplant Taylor Makakoa has been heating up the Strip for the past few years as assistant to Terry Fator, ventriloquist extraordinaire at the Mirage. Now pay attention, dummy! Vegas seems like an intense place to get into showbiz. Weren’t you nervous? Not at all! When I was 15, I started traveling around Thailand, Malaysia, and Cambodia. By the time I was back in Vegas, I’d been modeling so long that the stage was really no different. Any favorite shoots? The coolest magazine gig I ever did was on a remote beach in Thailand. I was wearing crazy thigh-high Harajuku-girl stockings. It was really hot! Well, that’s more than you wear onstage at the Mirage… Definitely! My favorite outfit is the military one, because I know the military guys like it. But most of the audience prefer the nurse outfit. That gets a big reaction. What did you think when you first saw the puppets? I was nervous ’cause I didn’t know how to handle them. I’m not a puppet person! Probably for the best. Got any secret talents of your own? I do tae kwon do and fire poi balls, which are balls on a chain that you light on fire and swing around. Wow, that’s pretty …

ASU Hockey Recruiting: Sun Devils Strike Again with Addition of Chris Burkemper

Arizona State bolstered its recruiting class with the addition of forward Chris Burkemper two weeks ago. Head coach Greg Powers is excited for the 6-foot-2, 185-pound monster to play for him in the fall. “Chris was a huge recruit for us and at the very top of our board for a long time. He’s going to light it up,” Powers said. Burkemper spent the last two seasons in the Eastern Junior Hockey League. He played for the Bay State Breakers and the Boston Junior Bandits and scored 17 goals and tallied 25 assists in 72 games. Last season alone, he had 29 points in 40 games with Boston. “The EJHL has prepared me for the college jump. My decision-making ability has definitely improved and I’ve learned to play at a quicker pace. It’s a good league and it helped me build my confidence,” Burkemper said. Not only did he gain confidence on the ice, but he also became confident enough to call Arizona State his home for the next four years. “I have loved the idea of playing hockey for ASU for as long as I can remember,” he said. “Coach Powers helped make my decision a lot easier… I can’t wait to be a part of it.” Everyone recruit seems to love coach Powers, but maybe there is a little more to the story on why the St. Louis, Missouri native chose Arizona State. “The girls, isn’t it obvious,” Burkemper jokingly told sundevilhockey.com “No, I’m just grateful for the opportunity to play for a championship-caliber team. I’m going to strive to become a better player, and also strive to do well in the classroom.” He said he is planning on getting his education from a program in the WP Carey School of Business. He is a very disciplined player who has a knack for getting to the dirty areas in the offensive zone. His offensive presence could help take the Sun Devils to the next level. “I like to gain the zone and be able to slow things down and make plays. I plan on bringing more offense to the team. I want to be able to help bring home some titles,” Burkemper said. Powers is thrilled that he won the Burkemper sweepstakes because he is just the right guy to bring fear to ACHA opponents. “He can really get up and down the ice, and score the puck,” Powers said. “He’s a big body up front and chose us over NCAA DI options that he had. Chris carries himself very well and ASU is a place he really decided he wanted to be and we are incredibly excited to have him.” FAST FACTS: Nickname : Criff or Burky Major: Business Administration or Finance Favorite Hockey Moment: Making a good run at Nationals during my PeeWee year What got you started in hockey?: My dad. Sun Devil Legends Series: No. 99 Shawn Swayda

The Backstory: Our “Summer of Legends” series kicks off with the always-entertaining No. 99. Though only a few Hall of Famers in major sports have donned the largest number available, 99 is usually reserved for larger-than-life personalities. For the Sun Devil football program, the players who wore 99 are no exception to this rule. While 99 has only been trotted out sparingly in comparison to other numbers, there’s a definite theme amongst the players who wore it. Through the years, the Sun Devil 99s have proven themselves as leaders in the locker room as well as on the field. Three different team captains wore 99, including our selection as today’s Sun Devil legend. The Legend: No. 99 DE Shawn Swayda (1992-1996) Swayda was a three-year starter at defensive end for the Sun Devils in the mid 1990s. The Phoenix native earned a spot on Bruce Snyder’s 1994 team, and he developed into a very successful player throughout his career. Swayda’s most memorable season came in 1996, when he was named an Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 performer. That year, the Brophy Prep graduate joined fellow teammates Jake Plummer, Derek Smith and Scott Van der Ahe in one of the most impressive groups of team captains Arizona State has ever seen. In 1996, Swayda helped the Sun Devils to an 11-0 record before falling in devastating fashion to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl. Nevertheless, Swayda has his fingerprints all over one of the most successful teams in Sun Devil history. When the Sun Devils upset then No. 1 Nebraska in week three of the 1996 season, Swayda was quoted after the game as saying, “We shut out the No. 1 team in America. If you want to play against us, you’ve got to come in here and knock us off.” The Honorable Mentions Tim Landers: A versatile lineman, Landers started on the defensive line for two season in No. 99 before switching over and earning All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors as an offensive guard as No. 74. Mitch Callahan: The nose guard was one of just two team captains on a 6-4-1 Darryl Rogers squad in 1983. Tommie Townsend: In 2001, Townsend was an Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 defensive end for Dirk Koetter’s Sun Devils. Who Wears 99 Now? As of now, 99 remains unclaimed, but perhaps a new recruit with a future in leadership will wear the number come fall. Other Famous 99s Wayne Gretzky-The Great One George Mikan-Won six NBA titles with the Minneapolis Lakers- Warren Sapp- All-American defensive tackle with the Miami Hurricanes and a Pro Football Hall of Famer. Poll Who do you think is the greatest Sun Devil to wear No. 99? Shawn Swayda Tommie Townsend Mitch Callahan Tim Landers Other ? 0 votes | Results

UCLA Finishes Home Slate In Style, Beats UCSB 2-1

UCLA’s home season started with a disappointing extra innings loss, but they made sure that it would end much better with a 2-1 win over UC Santa Barbara. Now their regular season home slate is in the books, and a 24-9 home mark with it, leaving the Bruins with one goal — a strong final weekend at Stanford and a return to Jackie Robinson Stadium next week for the Regionals. The Bruins’ spot at a Regional host is just about locked up, but a national seed is still on the table and a return to Jackie Robinson Stadium for the Super Regionals would suit 37-15 UCLA just fine. Whereas the bullpen let UCLA down on February 15 when the Bruins started their season, it was spot on against the Gauchos. After Cody Poteet worked six innings of one-run ball, the bullpen locking things down. James Kaprielian tossed a scoreless frame and Zack Weiss followed with one of his own before David Berg slammed the door to pick up his 17th save. Poteet ran into first inning trouble when a two-out RBI single put UCSB in front, but he was nearly perfect from there on out. The freshman walked one in the second inning, but that was the only other Gaucho that reached against Poteet. With Poteet cruising, the Bruins didn’t need much offense and they didn’t get much, totaling just six hits in the game. They ran themselves out of the first inning when they were twice caught stealing, but Pat Valaika tripled to start the second and Kevin Williams singled him home to tie the game at 1-1. From there on, UCLA struggled to do much at the plate. They ran themselves out of the fourth, but were otherwise inept until the sixth, when they finally got back on the scoreboard. Brian Carroll and Kevin Kramer singled to start the frame and after an Eric Filia sacrifice bunt, Carroll was standing just 90 feet away. All Valaika had to do was lift a fly ball deep enough for the speedy Carroll to tag, which he did, and the Bruins took a 2-1 lead. With the lead in hand, UCLA pulled Poteet and turned the game over to the bullpen, which finished the game with ease, and the Bruins’ home slate in style.
